A lot of writers are angry about AI right now, and much of that anger is earned. Machine-generated books are flooding online stores, some sold under authors who don't exist. We share that frustration.

We also think the conversation is missing something. For most working authors, talent was never the barrier. Cost and time were.

A note from Patrick

I published my first book in 2008, long before any of this existed. For my first dystopian fantasy, I paid a developmental editor $5,000 and a line editor $4,000, and the audiobook took six months and $7,500 for a professional voice actor. That was the price of doing it right, and most authors can't pay it.

Today, AI narration costs a few hundred dollars, and proofing tools catch errors before a manuscript ever reaches a reader. I still choose book by book: a human narrator for my first fantasy novel, AI narration for my business books, and my own cloned voice for House of Vale.

For an independent author, the right tools are often the difference between a story that reaches readers and one that never gets produced. That's why Perrine Publications exists.
